Chanting of gods names would not serve any purpose. Think of it seriously... if by mere chanting people got benefited... the whole world would leave karma and chant but only chant! Chanting is in no way related to prayers. Chanting is simply singing hymns in praise of God Almighty. Yes, one must always indulge in singing praises of God but only after completing their karma for the day. Prayers definitely if said properly reap their rewards!

Almost 99% people world over pray to God merely as a ritual. They do not reap benefits of their efforts. Prayers are never one-sided affair! If we seek something from God... we must be prepared to offer something to God in return. It can be welfare of the community or any other work meant for benefit of the society. Most human beings simply ask God for a favor. They never offer God anything in return.

I have observed people religiously going to temple for more than 15 years... as per them the benefits accrued were nil. Whether our path is religious, spiritual or the physical day-to-day manifest life... we simply need to have a goal in life. Having a goal means journey half completed. Once the goal is made... go after that goal with bulldog determination practicing patience, persistence and perseverance throughout!

In the domain of God there is no place for religion. It is spirituality knowing which one not only gains wisdom but also reaches the stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha). The end goal of every life is reaching the stage of enlightenment. If we desire knowing God... travel the spiritual path.
