The soul and the spirit mean the same. The soul atman is of the form of pure cosmic energy! The spirit within every human being... the soul atman within our heart is God Almighty in minuscule form... the essence of all being the same! To remove the dross within (impurities within) every soul atman manifests a cycle of 8.4 million manifestations to work out its karma. It is our soul atman that has manifested the body and not vice versa.

The life cycle of a human body is limited by 80 ~ 100 years. Compared to this... life cycle of a soul atman extends to 96.4 million earthly years. The body is perishable and ephemeral by nature. Our soul atman is indestructible! As the metal within an ore cannot purify on its own... the soul atman also cannot work out its karma on its own.

The manifestation of life starts as an amoeba (single cell formation)... further evolving into multi-cell formation, then insect life, plant life, animal life and finally the form of a human being. Every human being draws its intelligence from the reservoir of mind plus and mind minus. No human being ever has an independent mind... all have a brain that acts as a receiving and broadcasting station.

For the body to work out the karma imposed upon it... it needs the help of cosmic powers that be! As the soul atman within manifests the highest form of cosmic life... the form of a human being... the power of discrimination that becomes available to human beings makes it possible for a human being to gain enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and salvation (moksha).

Every human being draws positive thoughts from the reservoir of mind plus and negative from mind minus! As is the invocation of thoughts... so shall we be in the physical manifest life. Those indulging in wanton desires and materialistic riches invoke negative thoughts from the reservoir of mind minus... people with a sunny disposition and godly thinking invoke thoughts from the reservoir of mind plus. All is the result of a system that cannot err!
